Caspar J. FreterAttorney
Certified specialist for tax law

Consulting specialisations & author profile

As a certified specialist in tax law, I work exclusively in the field of tax law.

My main areas of expertise are transformation tax law (sole proprietorship to limited liability company, holding structures, change of legal form) and tax structuring advice, corporate succession and family foundations.

I also particularly enjoy advising on international tax law (double taxation treaties, exit taxation, unbundling) including transfer pricing. I have in-depth practical experience in the area of subsequent tax declarations and voluntary disclosures, most recently in particular with regard to capital gains from trading in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

In addition to my work as a lawyer, I also appear as a speaker at further training events for lawyers. In 2024, I founded the Tax Law Working Group of the Bremen Bar Association and headed it until I changed chambers.

Caspar J. Freter is an active member of the Munich Corporate Tax Forum and the German Bar Association (DAV).

Career

I studied at the Universities of Heidelberg, Madrid and Munich, specialising in tax law. I was able to deepen my knowledge of tax law during a supplementary degree in administrative science at the University of Speyer (Germany).

I gained my first practical experience in the field of tax law during my legal clerkship at the Munich tax office, including the tax investigation department.

I then worked for six years as an attorney for tax law at KPMG AG Munich and - as part of a short-term secondment - for KPMG Madrid before moving to Bremen in 2018 to join a boutique firm specialising in tax law and criminal tax law that operates nationwide in Germany.

I have been working for ROSE & PARTNER as a specialist tax lawyer since November 2024.

Caspar J. Freter is a recognised expert and is known to a wide audience primarily due to his tax law articles in the Handelsblatt and on tagesschau.de.

Private

As a born and raised Hamburg native, I am delighted to have found my way back to the riverside after many years of playing out of town and appreciated the proximity to the Elbphilharmonie due to my classical music training. In active terms, however, the fruits of this training are reserved for the tolerance limits of my immediate environment.
